Opiates possess very high addictive potential.
Long-term opiate use changes the way the brain works by changing the way nerve cells communicate with one another. If opiates are taken away from opiate-dependent brain cells, many of them will become overactive. Prescribed opiates are increasingly used in both prescribed and non-prescribed ways, both of which can lead to overdoses that cause long term health outcomes or death due to the fact that opioids out people at risk of respiratory depression.
